The World Lupus Federation has released a new white paper highlighting findings from a global public awareness survey on lupus ahead of World Lupus Day. Conducted by the Lupus Foundation of America, the survey explored public awareness, attitudes, and perceptions of lupus across regions worldwide.
The findings reveal that lupus remains widely misunderstood, with low familiarity (58% of respondents worldwide still know little or nothing about lupus) and there are persistent misconceptions about the disease and its potential severity. The white paper takes an in-depth look into the knowledge of lupus and its symptoms across regions, the prominence of stigmas, and the barriers and solutions for a path forward for improving understanding of lupus.
“Over the last 11 years, the World Lupus Federation has worked to drive global awareness of lupus by pushing for greater recognition of the disease’s full impact. This report reflects what we hear every day, that lupus is still too often misunderstood. By grounding our efforts in these insights, we can help more communities recognize lupus sooner, reduce stigma, and strengthen support for the millions of people affected by lupus.” – Louise Vetter, President and CEO of the Lupus Foundation of America
As Secretariat of the World Lupus Federation, the Lupus Foundation of America commissioned the global survey and white paper, both of which will help to inform strategies for further awareness, education and advocacy.
